Dragonfly Fibers and Christmas Teas!!

Hello Everyone,

Sometimes it is interesting to try and figure out how companies choose their various yarn names...but with this yarn,it is easy to see why they choose the name......Dragonfly Fibers! The sheer iridescence of both the Djinini and the Pixie remind me of dragon flies. The depth of colour and variegation is simply amazing. And as the ONLY Canadian supplier of this beautiful yarn, I am pleased to introduce you to their Djinni Sock yarn is 80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere and 10% Nylon. With 420 yards in a 4.2 oz.skein, it will make some fabulous socks!

In addition, their Pixie yarn is equally gorgeous and is 100% Superwash Merino, soft, luminescent and simply wonderful....fabulous for shawls, sweaters and scrumptious Christmas knitting...wow, did I just say "Christmas?".....yes it is coming...stop in and see these wonderful yarns for yourself.

In addition, their line of hand dyed roving simply has to be seen ( and touched!)

So please drop in when you have a moment to see what Dragonfly Fibers  has to offer....

And also, all the Christmas blends of teas are now in at the store, so come and get them before they are gone. They make great hostess gifts, stocking stuffers and the perfect small gift for that special someone!

Happy knitting,
Lynn

New Knit along and a couple of classes

Hi Everyone:

A couple of classes coming up and a new knit along , all the details are below, please pre register as space is limited.

 Happy Knitting

Lynn

 New "KNIT-A-LONG"......

Starting next Wednesday, November 13th , from 1 pm til 3 pm. (if there is enough interest.)

Please note this is not a class as such . We are all just working on the same project, and can help each other along the way. There is no charge for this, but I do ask that you buy the yarn from me. Of course, you are welcome to use yarn you have bought here in the past.

I have picked two shawl patterns, both of which use 3 colours of sock weight yarn. So you are welcome to choose which ever one you want. Let me know and I will purchase the pattern on your behalf, and you will receive an e-mail with the link to the pdf, and it will also go into your Ravelry library. I am having a hard time deciding myself as to which one I will do!!

I think the first day will mostly be spent deciding on our colour choices.  So if you have  a skein or two that you want to use bring them along, and we will pick something more to go along with it, or if you have nothing you want to use, then the sky is the limit as to what you can put together. I think one of the hardest parts will be picking our colours....I have some gorgeous new yarns that are in some spectacular colour ways!

So if you are interested, and plan to attend please let me know.

New Yarn for fall at The Purple Sock

Hello Everyone!

Well, fall is definitely in the air, and nothing makes me happier than
seeing all these great new yarns coming into the shop. Well, maybe going
home, making a cup of tea and settling down to knit with them makes me happy
too.

Lucinda( my oh-so-quiet assistant at the shop), is wearing a lovely cowl
knit in Kiko , a super chunky yarn that is 51% wool and 49% acrylic. It
knits up so quickly, perfect for last minute Christmas gifts (yes, it IS
coming quickly)..and at only $5.99 for a 50 gram ball, you can grab several
colours. The vest and wrist warmers are also knit in Kiko , and you just
need to come in and feel it to see how special it is. There are several
pattern books for this yarn as well, including this warm and wooly pullover
in that luscious shade of blue...so cosy!!

Hope you are enjoying this delightful fall weather...hope to see you soon...

Happy knitting!

Rug Hooked Jewellery with Jennifer Manuell

And a good time was had by all!!

That pretty much describes the workshop we just enjoyed given by Jennifer Manuell at The Purple Sock last week. Jennifer is a well known rug hooker http://fisheyerugs.blogspot.ca/,who has developed the most wonderful hooked jewellery...I just love the piece I made
( see photos!)...

We arrived Monday to a riot of colour in wool, yarns, sari silk, felted wool balls, beads, gorgeous threads and so much more! I think she brought enough stuff to fill her own shop, including a sewing machine that practically ran itself, lol!

Jennifer is an enthusiastic, creative, well-prepared and patient instructor...with nine of us gathered around two large tables, she quickly led us through the "basics" and then let us free to gather up our treasures in the colours we wanted. We were all focused on our projects, and were thrilled to see that, by the end of the first day, we had all completed our pieces!!

It is fascinating to me, as a knitter and a spinner, and a lover of all fibre arts, how easily they can all meld into one another. For although these pieces are "hooked"(as in rug hooking), it was wonderful to see how handspun yarns, ribbon yarns, novelty yarns and other bits and pieces, all combined with felted beads, glass beads and odds and ends of broken jewellery to emerge as something FABULOUS!

So,take a moment to pop on over to Jennifer's blog and don't forget that she is teaching here again in November! This time it is a stunning Christmas Stocking  that is certain to become an heirloom in your family....

Who knows, with the popularity of this jewellery class, I may just have to have her back in the spring!
Below are just a few photos of work in progress and some of the finished pieces!!

Hi Everyone!
There seems to be a lot of interest in the “Topsy Turvy Inside-Out Knitted Toys” book.  So I thought we could do a knit- along using this book. For anyone who hasn’t seen the book, you can go and look at the great video on You Tube showing quite a few of the knitting animals from the it..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9dWIPK9H3A

I also have a couple of them knitted up at the store, thanks to Cathy!!

So here are the details...you must buy, or have already bought a copy of the book, and we can each pick which one we want to work on, and then work on them together. We can help each other with any problems we come across.

This is not a class,  just all of us knitting on the same things and helping each other out. I would also appreciate it if you bought most of the yarn from me. We will start on Thursday afternoon, August the 1st.  1 pm till 3 pm.  If you are interested and need a copy of the book, please let me know as I still have a couple but can certainly get more!!

Also, several new magazines have arrived at the store including Knit Scene , Simple Knits, Spin-off and the latest Create and Decorate.

See below for descriptions of the classes.

Thanks Lynn
The Purple Sock
hooked jewellery
A fun class involving exploration, imagination, innovation and creativity, featuring hooking combined with beadwork, embellishments and handwork. You don’t need to be a master rug hooker or a professional seamstress to create a distinctive bespoke hooked accessory.  You just need a sense of adventure, some good materials and a little bit of patience.
There will be lots of samples to inspire your designs, basic supplies and tools....and you will learn various tried-and-true finishing methods.  Most people should be able to leave after one day of class wearing a new necklace!
Some handouts will be provided.

1-day class:  in this class we will create a basic necklace (several styles to choose from, similar to those pictured), and practice some of the various techniques used in making hooked jewellery.  Towards the end of the day, there will be a bit of a trunk show, featuring many samples of other styles of hooked jewellery, more complex necklaces, barrettes, belts, headbands, etc., to inspire future projects and show some of the possibilities.
Participants will receive a one-of-a-kind kit with patterns and ample supplies to make two unique necklaces (one fairly simple and one more advanced).

2-day class: incorporates the same content as a 1-day class, in addition to working on a second project and spending time discussing more complex construction methods, including deconstructing the items in the trunk show.

AJ’s Christmas stockings
My Auntie Jean (Armstrong) made hand-hooked Christmas Stockings for my sisters and me in 1977, and she continued to make 150+ stockings over the next 24 years.  Keeping this tradition alive in our family was the reason I learned how to hook in 1999.
Our Christmas stockings are hooked using a type of creative stitch to create unique designs – think rug hooking meets counted cross stitch…
All participants will receive a copy of my detailed instruction booklet All in the Family, an 8-page colour booklet with full-size paper patterns for both the stocking itself and the lining.  Class fee also includes a piece of even-weave burlap large enough to hook 2 stockings.  I will send out a complete supply list prior to the class.
1-day class: In the morning, the focus will be on the special hooking techniques for creating the motifs in these stockings and getting everyone started working on their first stocking.  In the afternoon, the final assembly will be demonstrated, from start to finish, using a sample (that I have hooked prior to the class).

Great Summer Top

Hello everyone!

Every once in a while ( well, quite often! to tell you the truth, lol!),  a great yarn comes into the shop and I just have to drop everything and make something out of it!

And such was the case with this Berocco yarn called "Maya"....it is a light weight chainette yarn, 85% Pima cotton and 15% baby alpaca, fabulous to knit with, and it comes in several soft summer-y shades and here is the result! I almost didn't want to take it off to showcase it on our lovely "Lucinda"mannequin, as I was enjoying wearing it so much! It is great with a summer skirt, or crops or a great cotton dress...it is so comfy and flattering with the shorter front and the waterfall sides and back.

Plus, it knit up in no time at all! A quick, fabulous summer project....so come on in, choose
your colours and be wearing it by next week!

Happy Knitting!

Short Row Techniques

Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock Yarn
On Wednesday afternoons we are currenly enjoying a KAL for Vitamin D, using Sweet Georgia Yarn's Tough Love Sock. This lightweight cardigan uses short row shaping, and we've been learning about different techniques for working these.

Today was my favourite; Japanese short rows. These are worked without wrapping the yarn, and create a smooth, no-gap finish on the right side. We've also looked at some different wrapping techniques for short-rows and yarn-over short rows. If you're interested in learning these techniques, Craftsy is currently featuring Carol Feller's workshop for free!  It's well worth taking a look and trying the different methods  to see what you prefer.

I can't wait to see how everyone's cardigans start to come together and hope to see some progress pictures in the KAL thread on the Ravelry group soon!

We have all finished knitting our mini Gansey and are in the proccess of ordering in yarn and planning our full size sweaters. We learned many things by doing this little Gansey which will come
in handy for lots of other things.

Here is a photo of most of them, A few were at missing and I will try to get a photo of them shortly.

Izzy dolls on their way!!

Hi Everyone,
A big "thank you" to everyone who knit either the Izzy Dolls or face cloths, or who donated toothbrushes and bars of soap. They are all very much appreciated, and will be going to very good use. There were 170 Izzy dolls handed in, and I am sorry I didn’t count the knitted face cloths, but there was a big basket full of them. Such great colours!!
If you have knit some Izzy dolls, and just didn’t get them handed in on time, I do have someone else wanting some to take to an orphanage in Hatti at the end of June. So if anyone feels like knitting a few more for her, that would be wonderful!
Again, many thanks to everyone....you will be making a lot of children very happy!

New Canadian Shawl Pins

 Hello everyone,

I love coming across new Canadian companies to showcase at the Purple Sock,
so when I found these stunning shawl pins, I thought they were perfect to
share with you.

These are hand crafted from sterling silver, bronze and copper with a
beautiful assortment of stones, beads, crystals and pearls to complement
each of the metals. I just love how some of them are hammered, some are
smooth and shiny, and some have this fabulous twisted wire which really adds
texture and interest.

We all spend so much time and energy on our knitting, spinning and weaving,
and I really feel that these pins are worthy of our work! So, for Mothers
Day,or for a special friend, or for yourself...drop in and have a
peek.....
