Gorgeous new wool from Italy!

Hello Everyone!

This organic wool called Stout, is just the perfect yarn to make a  wonderfully neutral piece to go with all your fall, and winter outerwear.

This yarn comes from untreated wool  which is not subjected to any  dyeing. The colour is in fact the natural colour of the sheep.

With 300 metres and in a beautifully gradient colour-way, you can make this lush, glorious cowl or a couple  smaller ones for gifts .

I love the way the colours blend into each other, giving the piece movement and an interest that you do not get from a singly coloured yarn.

With 6.5 mm it  makes for some very fast knitting, which is always a plus!

As always pictures of the yarn and cowl can be seen on my Blog http://thepurplesock.blogspot.ca/

Next Saturday Dec 5th is the Candlelight walk and Santa Claus parade, a great night for the whole family!!

Don't forget to come in and add your wishes for Christmas to our book!!

Dragon Strings Another Great Local yarn

Hello everyone,

My interest in local yarns was seriously peaked when these incredible yarns came in from Victoria Harbour, with their stunning colours and funky names, the yarns from Dragon Strings are just lovely.

In both gradient and mirrored gradient fingering weight,  Phoenix Wings Superwash Merino and nylon yarn is perfect for socks, shawls or any item where you want a lovely soft drape.

In addition, another one-of-a-kind yarn pictured here, is Gnome Hat..with 85% Superwash Merino and lots of fun, colourful neps that add terrific texture to your knitting.

These yarns would be a great addition to your stash, or seeing as Christmas is not far away, you could come in and place them on your "Wish List"....

On another note , the yarn I told you about not long ago....Hedgehog Fibres Yarn....has just flown out the door! So I will be placing another order in the next few days. I thought I would give you Hedgehog fans a chance to help pick the colours, and the weights of yarn that I order. So if you want to go and take a look at the colours available, and send me your preferences I will  see what I can do!!  https://www.flickr.com/photos/29825916@N05/albums/72157631857450574
but don’t wait too long as I want to get the order in!! I will be ordering in the one called Sock unless anyone is interested in a different one. There seems to be a fair bit of interest in the one she calls Skinny Singles which is what Stephen West seems to be using these days.

Take care and Happy Knitting

Great new Sirdar yarn

This gorgeous wool/nylon blend has a history! Harrap Tweed is named for the Harrap Brothers whose company started in the 1880’s  and became  Sirdar  in 1934.

The colours are incredible, deep clarets, rich blues, soft heathery greens and browns. All are just perfect for capes, sweaters, hats or any item where you want the warmth of wool, the machine washability of a blend and the depth of colour that makes for a special gift for yourself or for someone in your gift list.

And also great pictures of the yarn and patterns on Sirdar’s website here http://www.sirdar.co.uk/yarns/classics/dk/Harrap_Tweed_DK_F087

Oh Ireland!!

Hello Everyone,

I know we all have special places where we want to travel....mine include
Turkey and of course, Ireland...

But until that time comes, I will just have to comfort myself with this
soft, squishy, Superwash Merino from County Cork, Ireland...the colours are
simply amazing.

I am thrilled to announce I am now carrying Hedgehog Fibres!!

This yarn is not available everywhere, here in Ontario there are only a very few shops
that carry it.   It sells out as fast as it comes in, and now
The Purple Sock will be among those shops!!

All hand dyed using washfast and lightfast dyes, I can just imagine the
socks, shawls, cowls, wraps, hats and gloves that will come off  your
needles!

In addition, the Corriedale and Silk Merino top are equally stunning colours
for you to spin up your own beautiful yarns....

Hope to see you soon...

Adventures in Socks and A Small Project of the month club!!

Adventures in Socks (Sock of the Month Club)

Starting Thursday Oct 29th at 7:00 pm we are continuing our Adventures in Socks!  We will meet at the Purple Sock on the following dates:
·        October 29th
·        November 26th
·        January 28th
·        February 26th
·        April 28th
·        May 26th
Each evening you will get your new pattern, pick out some lovely yarn, and get ready for a new pair of socks! Every month will have a different yarn and pattern, with a little of everything hand knit socks has to offer..... This is a great way to experience new yarns and learn sock knitting techniques and tips.  The first month will be a fairly basic sock to get you back in the groove.
The cost will be $35+HST per month which includes the yarn, pattern and assistance from resident sock adventurer Cathy.  There is no pressure to attend each month, but that little deadline may help prevent the dreaded ‘second sock syndrome’ as you try to be finished your pair for the next round.
You need to have knit socks before and be comfortable knitting in the round in order to join in as this is not a beginner sock class.  If you have a tablet or phone that you use for Ravelry, bring it along so we can create our sock projects that evening.
Please let me know if you will be attending so I can have enough yarn on hand on October 29th.
Small Project of the month club
I know we all remember, or have heard about "old fashioned quilting bees".....well, I have been thinking of the same type of thing, but with knitting!
Once a month, I would like to offer a great one or two ball project, complete with yarn, the pattern, and a chance to get out of the house and be together with like-minded people.
We will learn different knitting techniques, try new yarns, meet new friends, enjoy wonderful teas,  and some great knitting time.....I hope you will join us!
Basic knitting skills will be required and $35.00 +HST  is all it takes!
Please let me know if you will be attending as  always space is limited.
We will be starting at 7 pm on Wednesday November 11th...hope to see you then...

Salish (Cowichan style) Hat Class

Hello all!

I am happy to be able to offer this class for those who missed Sylvia Olsen's visit to The Purple Sock this past summer.

We will spend an evening learning this special colour work technique, while knitting a fabulous, traditional hat. This technique  is slightly different to the stranded  colour work technique most of us are used to , as it seems to give a much stretchier, more pliable fabric.

More pictures can be found   on the pattern page on Ravelry

   When: Thursday Oct 1st, 6:30-8:30pm

Fees: $40 + HST.  This includes the pattern, and 3 full skeins of yarn (enough to make at least 2 hats!)  You will need 6.0mm needles( either dpns, 16 inch circular or 24 inch circular) which can be purchased that evening if you don’t own them.

Please let me know if you wish to attend as space is limited. Cathy McCracken and I will be your Instructors for the evening.

   Happy Knitting,

    Lynn

This is a great way  to start doing a bit of two colour knitting as the felting really hides any mistakes!!
Since this project takes 6 colours of yarn but has lots of several colours left over, we will be following this with another project that also uses several colours of the same yarn. So hopefully if you are interested, it will use up your leftovers from the first projects

The second project is this great little capelet. I do have a sample of it at the store if you want to check it out.  So if you are interested in one, or both of these projects, please let me know and I will add you to the list.
The Capelet will be on the same day of the week and time as the felted tote (once we are finished the tote bag )... so if you are interested in the capelet only, I  will let you know when we will be starting. It.

I hope there is something of interest to you, please let me know if there are classes or Knit Alongs you would be interested in , as I am always looking for new ideas!

New Madeline Tosh Arrivals'

Hello everyone,
Well, in spite the very warm weather this week, we all know that Fall is
just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the season than
with Madeline Tosh?!

In addition to our regular Tosh DK and Prairie, we have a brand new treat
called Twist Light, with 25% Nylon for all you lovers of Madeline Tosh, you
can now make socks with it!!

And the new colours? Amazing, stunning, deep, rich...oh, there are not
enough words to describe the simply scrumptious colours, plus I just love
that this yarn is ethically sourced in South Africa and beautifully hand
dyed in Texas, and that it now lives in my shop!

There is only one glitch in this story and that is the US Dollar, which
sadly has affected the price of this gorgeous yarn..so while our previous
stock will remain at the old price, the new stock has increased  to cover
the whole US/Canadian dollar business..not fun, but a fact of life for now
😔

Just a note to everyone in the Maderia knit along. Tomorrow Aug 18th will be
our last day to meet, as most are finished their top.
Stay tuned for info about the next knit along!!

One more note....our "Magic Cathy" is back from her summer travels and has
started her Help Sessions back up  here at The Purple Sock every Friday,
1:30 pm til 3:30 pm.  Just call to reserve your spot ( limited to four
students) and for just $10.00 for two hours, you will get your knitting
unscrambled, get back on the right track, pick up dropped stitches, figure
out short rows, learn to turn a heel  or whatever else is bugging you!
Private lessons also available  for $15.00 a hour.   Just give us a call and
reserve your spot.

Happy Knitting!

Thanks So much !!

Hello everyone!

Just a quick note to thank you all for coming out  for Canada Day and making it so special! It was great to see people knitting, spinning, rug hooking and just generally having a super time!

The two trees which we "yarn-bombed" ( plus the amazing spinning wheel!!) garnered lots of attention...so much so that I thought we might continue the tradition next year!

So, if you are interested, and have some extra red and white yarn hanging around, ( we have some free here at the shop as well), we would welcome some knitted or crocheted pieces to add to the collection for next Canada Day.

Thanks again to everyone who came out and supported us....you are a very special group of ladies ( and men!!)

Happy Knitting,

Lynn

Canada Day Fun!!

Hello Everyone,

Well, summer is finally here and that can only mean that Canada Day is
not far behind! So, to celebrate,The Purple Sock has decided to combine two great events..Canada Day and World Wide Knit in Public Day!!

World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes as a
way to bring what can be a relatively solitary activity, into the public
prevue, as a way to share this wonderful art form, and as a way to show the
world that it is not just "grannies" who knit...not that there is anything
                   wrong with "Grannies",lol!

So, from 25 "Knit in Public" events in 2005,to
over 1200 last year, this is a hugely growing phenomenon that we are proud
to support and encourage! It is usually held the middle of June which didn't
work for me , but since the street will be closed on July 1st for Canada Day,  I
have decided to hold it then.

The main street will be closed to vehicles from 11-3, and many of my customers will be sitting
outside under an awning, demonstrating various fibre
arts..knitting, spinning,  crocheting and rug hooking...we hope you will join us and check out the fun!

There will be sales, treats, face painting, great live music, bouncy castles, hot dog eating contest,  and camaraderie. So come for an hour, come for the day, bring a lawn chair, and of course your knitting, spinning, rug hooking, crocheting, whatever makes you happy...the more the merrier!

And speaking of sales? At the Purple Sock..ANY CANADIAN YARN will be 10% OFF! That includes 3dogknits,  Briggs and Little, Fleece Artist, Cabin Fever, Indigo Dragonfly, Sweet Georgia...all at 10% off..time to show your Canadian pride and add to your stash!

To go along with it we have decided to do a little yarn bombing, We are still looking for pieces of knitting or crocheting  done in  red and white to cover a tree or two on Canada day, any pieces will be happily accepted about 17 inches wide and any length. I do have some red and white yarn at the store that you can use if you don’t have any. So get your needles out and  get knitting, bring in before or bring it along on July 1st.

See you on Wednesday, July 1st!!

Happy knitting,
Lynn

Oops! Change of plans!!

Hello everyone,

Seems we have Bats in our Belfry!! Somehow they got in and changed the
date of the Witches Walk on the little handout book marks that were placed
in many of the downtown Coldwater shops.

SO, if you still have that little bookmark or you have already written the
date on your calendar, please change it to OCTOBER 21st, 2015!!

Enjoy your summer, but keep your Witches Hat handy...see you on October
21st!!

Happy Knitting,

Lynn

Up Coming Knit along

Hi Everyone

We have just decided today to do a knit along for a little summer top called Maderia here is the link to it.  http://www.berroco.com/patterns/maderia

And here is the link to the page with the yarn colours. http://www.berroco.com/yarns/berroco-linus

I do have a sample knit up here at the store if you want to see it in person.

So pick your colour and let me know by Wed. June 10th  as I will be sending in a order for the colours everyone wants.

I am hoping if I get my order soon enough we could start on Wednesday June 24th.  This will be in the afternoons from 1 til 3 pm.

Like always  this is a knit along and there is no charge but I do expect you to buy the yarn from me.

On Canada Day again this year we will be celebrating World Wide Knit in Public day, (I know we are a bit late, it is really June 13th  ) but it works for me as the street is closed for Canada Day and last year we had lots of interest in what we were doing.  Some of you might remember that last year we knit bunting before the event and had it hung up.  Pictures of last years event can be seen here on my blog:  http://thepurplesock.blogspot.ca/2014/07/canada-day-celebration.html. I still have the bunting and will rehang it again this year but have been thinking we could do something else as well – Yarn bombing!

I have ideas for 2 objects: I have an old spinning wheel that I thought we could “yarn bomb” and also we could bomb a tree on the main street.  I need help getting the knitting and crocheting done: for the wheel I will bring it in to the store, if you want to knit a piece pick a part of the wheel and then make something to cover the area you have chosen. For the tree you can knit or crochet strips to be sewn together later, email me for dimensions.  I am certainly open to suggestions of objects to yarn bomb, so lets hear what you think!!

See you soon and happy knitting...

Great new Bags

Hello everyone,

What is it about bags??! I LOVE THEM! So many bags for so many different projects, some stay at home, some come to the shop with me, and some go on trips with me! I can never have too many.....

Sooo, when I saw these terrific, funky, handy and just about perfect bags from Estelle, I knew I would be ordering them for The Purple Sock, and they have just arrived!

Lots of sizes, some a small clutch size for needles and notions, to the "over-nighter" size when you just cannot decide which knitting project to take on vacation with you...so you take them all...right??!

They have lots of pockets including some clear ones so you can see that, yes, you did grab your pattern and it is right there...they are water resistant, have some cool, funky patterns, great zippers and nice, comfy handles..all in all...just the perfect bag..and nicely priced at from $10.00 to $34.99..see you soon.....

New yarn in from Fleece Artist.

Hello Everyone,

Well, Fleece Artist has done it again! This hand-dyed, 100% wool yarn is a gorgeous " thick and thin" which works up beautifully into everything from hats to cowls to sweaters. This would also be great for rug hooking!!

Check out Ravelry for lots of free patterns for this yarn, it works up quickly on an 8mm needle, and the colours are so pretty

Biscotte And Cie!!

Hello Everyone

I do love showcasing beautiful Canadian yarns and this one hits a particular high note. Made in Quebec, this 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon yarn is extra special as it self stripes amazingly!! The colours are richly pigmented, and with 351 metres in each skein, you will find lots of uses for it, socks, shawls, summer sweaters....I particularly love the "Watermelon" colourway as it makes me actually believe that summer is coming!

Of course, seeing as I do not think we have even had spring yet, there is still time to knit one more pair of socks!

As a special introduction to  this yarn , it will be 10% off for you, my loyal customers, for this coming week, April 15th to April 19th.  So just mention this email and get it at 10% less.

A big thank you to everyone !!

           Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to say a HUGE "Thank You" to everyone for the wonderful number of
hats, Izzy dolls and finger puppets and face cloths turned into The Purple Sock! Here is the final tally...60 hats, 185 Izzy dolls, six facecloths, and 38 finger puppets!! Isn't that amazing!!?

They will be sent with the nursing students from Georgian College who will be going shortly to the Dominican Republic where I know they will be enjoyed, appreciated and loved!

Just a reminder to anyone who wants to do some more charity knitting...please know that I am always glad to collect items to go to the Warm Hands Network. Here is a link to their website with details about them. This is an on-going project, and when I have enough items I usually find someone to deliver them to Ottawa if they are going that way, or I mail them out.
